5 Reasons to go to on a Farmers market date
I’m not-so-secretly obsessed with farmers’ market dates. When we drive past one happening Jeff just knows to stop! And it’s not just about the food (which is phenomenal, by the way); it’s about everything I get out of going – health, community, sustainability, and believe it or not, I love it for a date spot!
1. Freshness That’ll Spoil You Rotten
First off, the produce you snag at these markets? Unparalleled freshness. We’re talking about veggies and fruits that were probably chilling in the soil or on a tree 24 hours ago. It’s like farm to table at your own table, which I honestly love! Farmers markets are what made me start growing my own produce and introduced me to composting.
2. Local Love
Shopping at farmers’ markets means your money is giving a big bear hug to the local economy and the hardworking farmers. It’s direct support – no middlemen taking a slice of the pie. If you’ve seen “Hello Dolly” you know that “Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around, encouraging young things to grow.” And you’re literally supporting someones livelihood. I just think that that feels really nice!
3. Kind to the Planet
Did you know that “in fiscal year 2022, the United States imported nearly $3.3 billion worth of cut flowers, plants, and nursery stock products from 81 countries?” That’s 80% of the cut flowers in America! The percentage for food is significantly less, but it is still being transported from all across America. I live in California so Avocados are aboudant here, but we still import 90% of our avocados! Switching just one piece of produce to something local is a huge win for sustainability because less travel time for food means less pollution. Plus, many of these farmers use sustainable methods that are kinder to Earth. It’s a win-win for everyone involved, including our planet.
4. Adventure on a Plate
Farmers’ markets are like treasure hunts for foodies. I do not know if you’re allowed to try the produce at a grocery store, but my gut instinct says no. At a farmers market the vendors will let you try anything you want! You’ll discover new flavors, learn about unique varieties, and maybe even challenge yourself to cook something new and adventurous.
5. Community Vibes and Third Spaces
There’s something special about the atmosphere at a farmers’ market. Chatting with the people who grow your food, meeting new people with the same interests as you, soaking in the local musicians’ tunes – it’s community bonding at its finest. And I’ve found that the people there really really want you to succeed. They will encourage you to start a backyard garden. They will give you tips about when and how to start different seed varieties. I’ve gained so much knowledge and learned how to grow my own microgreens because of going to the farmers market.
Bonus List of Farmers Market Date Ideas:
- Cooking Challenge Date: Start your date with a stroll through the farmers market, each picking out ingredients that catch your eye. The challenge? Create a meal together using only the items you’ve purchased. This activity not only encourages teamwork but also lets you both share your culinary skills and preferences.
- Picnic Basket Date: Visit the farmers market with the goal of assembling the perfect picnic. Look for fresh fruits, cheeses, freshly baked bread, and perhaps some local wine or craft beverages. Once you’ve gathered your goodies, head to a nearby park or scenic spot to enjoy your feast and each other’s company in a relaxed setting.
- Photography Walk Date: Bring your cameras or smartphones and turn the farmers market visit into a photography challenge. Capture the vibrant colors of fresh produce, the textures of handmade goods, or candid moments of market life. It’s a great way to see the market through each other’s eyes and can lead to some interesting conversations about art and aesthetics.
- Sampling Safari Date: Make it a point to try something new from each vendor that offers samples, whether it’s a piece of fruit, cheese, or a unique baked good. This can be a fun way to explore new tastes together and find your new favorite food items. Engage with the vendors and learn the stories behind their products for a deeper experience.
- DIY Workshop Date: Some farmers markets host workshops or demonstrations, such as cooking classes, gardening tutorials, or crafting sessions. Plan your date around one of these events. It’s a great opportunity to learn something new together and engage in a shared activity that might spark new interests or hobbies.
Remember, the best part of a farmers market date is the opportunity it provides to engage with each other and your community in a meaningful way. Enjoy the time spent discovering new things together and savoring the simple pleasures of life. If you’re ready to get going the USDA has a list of famers markets!
